From today I will be counting my current top 10 favorite movies of all time. Only singular films are allowed in one spot. No franchises are allowed to take up one spot. Here are a few honorable mentions:

  • The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
  • The Godfather (1972)
  • Spirited Away (2002)
  • Memento (2000)
  • The Shining (1980)
  • Up (2009)

As Robert Duvall says in Apocalypse Now, “I love the smell of napalm in the morning.” I don’t think the Japanese did during World War 2. Grave of the Fireflies is the most powerful war film that I have ever seen. Grave of the Fireflies is proof of the depths that anime and animated films in general are capable of going to. Most people view animated films as just “cartoons” for kids and families. Certain critics think animated don’t offer any depth or reflection of life. To be honest, I partially agree. Some of my favorite animated movies, such as Spirited Away and Toy Story, do contain important themes and messages but is then accompanied with kiddy fantasy and playfulness. Grave of the Fireflies doesn’t deal with any of that and gets straight to the point. War freaking sucks. But the film doesn’t talk about soldiers shooting each other in the head. Instead the film focuses on two children who are unfortunate to be alive in this situation. Their mother is killed and their other relatives have turned to greed. These two children are now stuck in a situation they have never learned to prepare for. As they continue to survive they realize how demented human morality can be in such situations of disaster. Grave of the Fireflies is the best tearjerker I have ever seen and will definitely have some emotional effect on you. In fact, this film could be called the saddest movie ever made, at least to me. This film is highly obscure to the general public because it was only released in Japan but there are DVDs of the film with subtitles. Please check Grave of the Fireflies out because it is simply one of the greatest war films ever made.
